On March 31st, HC21 hosted over 100 health care leaders gathered to discuss the development of Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) in our state. ACOs are founded on the belief that effective and affordable care is achievable through a new delivery system focused on provider collaboration and patient engagement. The meeting, held at Nissan North America, featured case studies from Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Holston Medical Group, CIGNA Healthcare and BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee. Speakers shared insights on how ACOs differ from past payment strategies (such as HMOs), the potential ACOs offer for improved clinical outcomes and care coordination, how each health care stakeholder will be impacted and engaged, as well as potential challenges and legal issues.
The meeting topic was timely as the 31st also marked the CMS release of proposed rules under the Affordable Care Act to assist health care providers in coordinating care for Medicare patients through ACOs.
