HC21 is learning more about Social Determinants of Health at the Humana Summit this morning. While presenting, Gene Hoover, Regional Health Care Director for Walgreens, noted HC21's work to improve community health in our region.
You might recall social determinants of health was one of the topics HC21 included among our agenda at our 2018 Annual Health & Productivity Forum. During the May 2018 Forum, Dr. Bruce Sherman, National Alliance, shared his passion for the consideration of socioeconomic status when developing benefit design. He noted that low-wage workers have the highest prevalence of unhealthy behaviors and chronic conditions, and the highest proportion of healthcare costs as a percentage of wages. He suggested that employers must recognize this issue if they're going to achieve benefits equality, not benefits equity.
