On Wednesday, September 19 in Downtown Knoxville, HC21 hosted a workshop for employers; Great Expectations- Understanding Issues & Managing Innovations. During this event, six national thought leaders helped participants understand the issues currently associated with managing Oncology and Specialty Rx within their organizations. They discussed some of the innovative approaches available to help reach benefit objectives.

In regard to legislation on health benefits, Chantel remarked that it is the quietest it's been in her 21 year history in DC.

Sarah Daley, Research Director, Benfield-Gallagher

While covering innovations happening in oncology benefits management, Sarah noted four strategies for value-based oncology management; Direct patients to better providers, Influence treatment plans, Align payments to providers with better care, and Improving end-of-life care.

Crystal Williams, President of RxReins

Crystal discussed stop loss insurance with our attendees, and noted the top cost conditions have shifted to oncology and specialty prescriptions.

Dr. Bruce Sherman, CMO, National Alliance of Healthcare Purchaser Coalitions

Dr. Sherman explained how some employees on HDHPs skip doctor visits, avoid tests, and don't fill prescriptions. He noted this is especially true when higher cost prescriptions are involved.

Dr. Heather Sundar, SVP Consulting & Employer Solutions, Archimedes

Dr. Sundar asked our attendees to remember three numbers; 700 specialty drugs in the approval process, 7,000 rare diseases that need a cure, and $700,000 price tags.
